Mr Mansukh Mandaviya is the Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers, in the Government of India. Formerly, he was Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways (Independent Charge) and Chemicals and Fertilisers in the Government of India. Mr Mandaviya was born in a small village named Hanol in Palitana taluka of Bhavnagar district in the state of Gujarat, in a middle-class farmer’s family. He holds a postgraduate degree in Political Science from Bhavnagar University.
Since his youth, Mansukh Mandaviya has had a penchant for serving people; and thus, has been very active in politics. He became a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and soon became a State Executive Committee Member of ABVP, Gujarat Unit. On appreciation of his intellect, skills and zeal to work hard, he was appointed as a leader of Yuva Morcha and then the President of BJP Unit of Palitana. Mr Mandaviya also holds the record of being the youngest Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Gujarat, when he was first elected in 2002.
Working diligently to serve the people, especially the marginalised sections of the society, and uplifting them, has been Mr Mandaviya’s only goal. Towards this, as an MLA, he organised two Padyatras stretching 123 Km and 127 Km, respectively, with the title Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao and Vayasan Hatao. After his tenure, in 2010, he became the chairman of Gujarat Agro Industries Corporation Limited.
In a very short time span, at the young age of 38, Mansukh Mandaviya was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. He was also a part of several standing committees in various fields.
In recognition of his diligence, passion and hard work, Mr Mandaviya was appointed as the Secretary for State Unit, BJP Gujarat, in 2013 and General Secretary in 2014. Later, in 2014, he was appointed as the Gujarat State Incharge of BJP’s High-tech & Mega Membership Drive Campaign which led to 1 crore people joining BJP in Gujarat.
Mr Mandaviya is well known for his intellectual analysis and thought leadership, which he also exhibited in his speech on the ‘2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’, at the United Nations on October 20, 2015. He has travelled to several countries to explore and understand their policies, management techniques and governance models to help India grow at a rapid pace.
On July 5, 2016, Mansukh Mandaviya was sworn in as the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Shipping and Chemical and Fertilizers, in the Government of India. Serving as a Union Minister, he implemented diverse action plans and policy decisions to impart efficiency and speed in delivering the good work of the Government to the masses. He was re-elected for a second term as an MP in Rajya Sabha in March 2018.
With his decisive and bold leadership aimed at the well-being of the people, Mansukh Mandaviya has helped to increase the daily road construction speed, decreasing the cost of Urea and other fertilizers, establishing more than 7,924 Jan Aushadhi stores to provide more than 1,402 medicines and more than 200 surgical items and medical devices at affordable rates and reducing the cost of heart stent and knee implants. Additionally, he has not left any stone unturned to help and uplift the common man, women, farmers and businesses.
Mr. Mandaviya has been a part of various delegations, twice with the Honourable President of India and once with the Honourable Vice President of India to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) and develop bilateral relations with other nations. In the Asian continent, he has visited China, Israel, Oman, Nepal, Dubai and Uzbekistan. He has also visited European countries including England, Germany and Hungary, along with South American countries such as Brazil and Argentina. The African continent has also been explored by Mr Mandaviya, including countries of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Algeria, Equatorial Guinea, Swaziland and Zambia. In an Oceania Region, he has visited New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji and Australia.
Mansukh Mandaviya has played a vital role in the growth and development of New India with his hard work and organisational skills. Being an ardent propagator of feminine hygiene and women’s rights, he was awarded ‘Men for Menstruation’ by UNICEF on Menstrual Hygiene Day for his initiative of ‘Suvidha Sanitary Napkin’ under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) Scheme. Touted as a ‘Green Minister’, Mr Mandaviya has been at the forefront of several environmental issues and worked towards a clean and green nation.
In May 2019, Mansukh Mandaviya took oath as a Minister of State in the Council of Ministers, Government of India. He was the Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, along with being the Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers. Mr Mandaviya also represented India in the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland in January 2020.
His vision to expand the maritime potential of India paved the way for prioritised port-led development. Mr Mandaviya’s initiatives towards this included the development of the Ro-Pax terminal at Hazira in Gujarat, which helped give momentum to the water-resource based economy in the country. He also strengthened inland water connectivity through Brahampurta river in the ‘Mahabahu-Brahmaputra’ project, focusing on terminal development. His initiatives led to substantial boosting of business and increased connectivity. Mansukh Mandaviya also organised the Maritime India Summit 2021, during the course of which Maritime India Vision 2030 was launched, paving the way for the next 10 years. The Summit was aimed at fostering interaction with global shipping stakeholders and promoting investment and business opportunities in the Indian shipping sector, which helped expand the scope in the industry.
Mansukh Mandaviya took charge as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare in the Government of India on July 7, 2021, with an additional charge of the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers. Through sheer hard work, determination, and diligence in serving the people of India, Mr. Mandaviya has risen through the ranks from the grassroots level. Charting a challenging and fulfilling journey from being a young leader to a state-level representative to a Minister of State, and now as a Union Cabinet Minister, his commitment to serve the nation has been evident from his various endeavors.
